It's birthday season here which usually results in last minute panics and it's good to know that nothing has changed. I slipped into a well known brand discount store this morning, hoping to pick up a suitably 'cool' hoodie to add to the meagre one or two presents that tomorrow's celebrant will be ripping open; I still work on the basis that more is more and that the larger amount of wrapping paper used, the happier the child - cardboard boxes come into their own to disguise books!
The shop assistant was standing back from the display unit and sighing. I joined her. Osprey had sent a few handbags for sale and they were gorgeous. Now selling at around 40% of their original price two or three different styles stood head and shoulders above the surrounding bargains. We looked at pockets, removed stuffing, compared colours, slung over shoulders; and then I replaced my favourite and moved on. I glowed with self-satisfaction at this act of restraint, checked out the rails and found nothing for the birthday child and so returned to the exit, clutching a knock-down jumper in my gorgeous colour; this diversion tactic was, I figured, better than returning to the handbags. I couldn't resist a sneaky peak as I exited the shop, it was only ten minutes later but only one handbag left.
The soon to be fifteen year old has some of his fav chocolate to unwrap instead, which will be bubble wrapped to fend off "I know what it is" comments and added to the pile of similarly inspiring gifts!
